Virginia Hyland : Winner of the 2013 B&T Women in Media Award – Media Agency

Name// Virginia Hyland
Position// HM Communications & Get Social Media – Founder & Principal
What’s your current position? How long have you been in this position?
Founder & Principal of 2 companies for past 12 years.
Tell me about someone who has influenced your career?
Peter Zavecz has been a constant in my life! I worked for Zav at ACP and he couldn’t believe I would be crazy enough to start up my own company. Once I did run my own Media Agency he recommended a client to me who is still with me today. He helped me to get a start as a business owner and this start gave me the confidence to grow the business. I went from a one man band to 21 band members today.
How did you get your first job in Media?
I left my country town and travelled 9 hours to Sydney at the age of 17 years all by myself. My mum had taught me to type. Very scared and intimidated I went for a job at Herald Classifieds where we had to pass a typing test. I just passed and Fairfax took me under their wing. They gave me wonderful training in sales skills. We had cold call sheets and would make cold call after call every day. A skill I am thankful for today and has helped me build a business out of nothing.
If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be?
I am very blessed to have my job. I have great clients and a great team. What more could I want, it’s been an amazing journey from where I started with no money in my pocket.
What do you do when you aren't working?
I have a gorgeous husband and 2 young children. My weekends are filled with family times and watching my daughters grow and learn.
What is your favourite Magazine?
There are so many! I like AWW for the interesting articles, CEO magazine to find out how other successful people run companies, Marie Claire for opening my mind to world issues affecting women and Donna Hay for amazing recipes that are easy for a lowly cook like myself to create perfectly.
What was the last campaign you did with magazines?
We work with many beauty, fashion, FMCG and Pharmaceutical clients. We are constantly advertising in magazines. One of our most successful recent campaigns was a full magazine buyout for RIMMEL to launch Scandaleyes. We saw a tremendous sales spike from this execution that beat some of our television campaign spot buys.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Sydney is such a beautiful city and has so much to offer. I feel like I’m on holidays on the weekend when we go to the beach. Where I grew up we only had a creek. Other than that I just love visiting a new destination every year.
Who would you most like to interview for a magazine?
Saint Mary Mackillop – she had such an amazing life. I want to know how she made it through excommunication from the church and how she still was able to keep her faith. She had so many doubters but still performed miracles.
What makes you laugh?
Practical jokes, there have been many over the years!
