Name// Karen Halligan
Position// General Manager of Slingshot Media
What’s your current position? How long have you been in this position?
I am the General Manager at Slingshot Media (slingshotmedia.com.au) we are an independent, fast growing, strategic media agency that specialises in leveraging client’s monetary and non-monetary assets.
I have been in this role for 3 ½ years, prior to that I worked as a client director in multinational media agencies and had a 3 year stint client side at Coke.
What was your first job in Media?
I started in a small creative agency as a receptionist then moved to a media planning role not long afterwards. I found my first job by typing 130 letters to advertising agencies using the yellow pages for addresses….the internet would have made this a much easier task but it was a long time ago so not an option!
Tell me about someone who has influenced your career?
I really like inspirational women and have had the opportunity to work with two in particular who inspired me for different reasons. The first was Pam Lane she showed me the importance of heart and relationships in the media industry. The second was Anne Parsons she managed to deliver me the right balance of guidance and empowerment which really allowed me to grow.
How do you describe your job to your friends outside media?
I compare it to shopping but with much bigger budgets. We get a task, target audience and a budget to make the right choices.
What is your favourite magazine?
Marie Claire has always been a favourite but I do love a bit of gossip so the weeklies get a run also
What do you do when you aren't working?
Mmmm….Exercise less than I would like to, drink more than I should but mainly spend time with my husband and 3 young daughters.
What was the last campaign you did with magazines?
We are currently working on a SunRice campaign and magazines are providing meal inspiration.
Best compliment you've ever received?
My husband says I make him a better person, I am not sure how but it is nice to hear all the same. From a work point of view my team once told me that they felt I was always on their side.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I just wanted every day to be different so mission accomplished but I nearly ended up as a history teacher.
Best magazine ad you’ve seen?
I am a sucker for a foldout so still love the big fashion and beauty spreads.
