Winners of a new magazine awards program, launched by ad trade journal AdNews, were announced on Friday, with Pacific Magazines’ Better Homes and Gardens taking out top honours.

The Australian Magazine Awards were judged by a panel of advertising industry executives, with magazines rated on several criteria including ABC circulation, Roy Morgan readership and Nielsen ad volume data for 2008/09.

Winners were announced in 15 categories.

Better Homes and Gardens won in the Home & Garden category as well as taking out Magazine of the Year, beating finalists Shop Til You Drop (ACP Magazines) and Delicious (News Magazines).

Estee Lauder managing director, Terry Little, guest speaker at the awards breakfast event, spoke of the importance of magazines for building premium brands, the need to continually engage with and reinforce the brand relationship with consumers, and the challenges posed by growing use of the internet and digital media.
